Past Simple

Structure: Subject + verb-ed

The phone rang.

A short, completed action.

Past Continuous

Structure: Subject + was/were + verb-ing

I was sleeping when the phone rang.

A longer action in progress, often interrupted.

The Interruption Pattern

Structure: While + past continuous, + past simple

While I was cooking, the fire alarm went off.

The background action (continuous) gets interrupted by a shorter one (simple).

Two Things at Once

Structure: While + past continuous, + past continuous

While she was reading, he was cooking.

Two continuous actions running in parallel, neither interrupting the other.
